Long
Life pump shaft sleeves.
Bossong
Engineering manufactures a range of long life pump shaft sleeves to
assist in the efficient running of pumps being used in the mining,
mineral processing and power generation industries
The
cost associated with pump shaft sleeve wear forms a significant part of
pump operating costs for the following reasons:
1)
Frequent packing adjustment to compensate for shaft sleeve wear.
2) Premature packing failure due to irregular shaft sleeve surfaces.
3) Excessive use of gland water
4) Excessive bypass through stuffing box.
5) Premature pump failure causing lost production
6) Premature pump wet end maintenance causing loss of partially worn wet
end components.
Conventional
methods of applying abrasion resistant surfaces to shaft sleeves are:
metal
powder spraying,
Oxy-fuel brazing
laser cladding.
Plasma Welding
Bossong
Engineering utilizes the plasma welding technique known as Plasma
Transferred Arc or PTA.
Pump
shaft sleeves form one of the main production lines for our PTA systems.
The PTA weld metal overlay process is used to produce long life pump
shaft sleeves, shafts, plungers, wear plates and specific wear parts,
along with various valve components.
The
high quality weld metal deposit achieved and the range of materials that
can be used distinguishes this process from any other. The PTA process
allows us to develop and apply our own metal alloys, metal carbides and
inter-metallic materials.
Fine
spherical particles of tungsten carbide or other carbides and nickel
alloy are injected into the plasma arc which is focused onto the surface
of the sleeve. The arc produces temperatures up to 25,000 deg C, which
causes the nickel alloy and the sleeve surface to fuse together creating
a strong metallurgical bond.
The
surfaces of the carbide particles are also fused to the nickel alloy.
The now fully integrated coating offers superior resistance to abrasion,
corrosion and/or the thermal shock experienced by pump sleeves.
This
has enabled us to provided metallurgical solutions for mineral
processing and refining equipment which is exposed to severe
combinations of erosion and corrosion.

Trials
conducted in highly abrasive areas of the Alumina processing industry
have exceeded 5800 hrs.
In
Iron ore briquette production, shaft sleeve life has been improved
tenfold over “metal sprayed sleeves”.
Sleeves
are manufactured to order from Carbon steel or 316 Stainless steel
hollow bar.
Our
standard coating thickness is 1mm, but this can be varied to meet
specific customer requirements.
The
advantages of sleeves produced by Bossong Engineering using the PTA
process are as follows:
Pump
sleeves have lasted more than 10 times the life of conventional sleeves.
The increased life now exceeds the life of wet end components (pump
volutes, doors and throat bushes) reducing pump maintenance costs and
maintenance frequency.
Lower environmental impact is achieved through reduced gland water usage
and leakage.
High temperature operation resulting from gland water failure or
“dry” operation has not caused sleeve failure.
Installation and maintenance of sleeves and packing is a simple process
(when compared to mechanical seals).
The cost is a fraction of that of mechanical seals.
Spherical tungsten carbide particles provide reduced packing friction
thereby extending packing life.
Electro-less nickel plating after machining can be applied to provide
additional corrosion protection.
Ongoing research and development of the process and derived metallurgy
enables us to provide state of the art solutions to our clients.
PTA coated pump shaft sleeves produced by Bossong Engineering are quite
simply the most wear resistant long life sleeves available.
Valve
component refurbishment
Valve
components can have greatly increased life span with the correct
selection and application of PTA metal cladding.
Materials can be
selected to provide significant improvements in corrosion and abrasion
resistance.
Valves
components can be produced for most standard valve configurations.

Positive
displacement pump pistons and valves
Positive
displacement pistons can be refurbished or manufactured to provide
extended life in corrosive and abrasive environments.
A
high quality surface finish is obtained from selected coatings,
increasing the life of packing and seals.
Fully
welded coatings are resistant to delaminating failures, the common mode
of failure in metal sprayed coatings. They provide increased resistance
to high stress abrasion when compared with ceramic coatings.
Non-return
valves are PTA coated with materials that provide significant impact and
abrasion resistance.
PTA
metal cladding provides improved life and reliability to positive
displacement pumps.
PTA
The PTA process is a
welding process combining the advantages of plasma welding with powdered metal
consumables. Corrosion and erosion resistant overlays of exceptional quality can
be produced on a wide range of substances.
Deposition rates as low as
0.3 Kg per hour can be applied to intricate components and up to 25 Kg per hour
on heavy components, wear plates and pipes.
